The best RPG on the iPhone.

Written by JoeTheQuestFansite | Last updated 2 months ago | 4 Thanks |
  • Huge, fully explorable and interactive game world
  • Over 50 engaging and fun quests
  • Great old school graphics
  • Funny and witty NPC dialouge
  • Traditional RPG leveling up systems with main attributes and many skills.
  • Great replay value
  • Expansions avaliable!
  • Relies on Expansions to add extra game play hours unless you replay the game
  • Few music tracks, BGM can be repetive.
  • Diffcult to start (But great once you are past the start)
The Quest is not a well known game. Redshift, the developers, consists only of 2 members. One for graphics, one for coding. It originated from a Pocket PC game called 'Legacy', The Quest is Legacy 2. Knowing this, it is inspiring that such amazing game can come from such a small team and humble beginnings.

I was personally won over by the screenshots after being put off the RPG genre on the iPhone after the flood of iMob and iVampire type games. The screenshots themselves tell only a minute fraction of the story.

When you first start The Quest and begin a new game, a little into scene will play telling you of the story. When you enter the game world you will be given a little more information, some instructions and then its just you, alone in the big wide world of The Quest.

This can seem quite daunting at first, especially if you stray too far and are swarmed by archers. But if you head to the nearest town, talk to everyone you find you'll soon be immersed in the game.

GAMEPLAY - 5/5

The gameplay of The Quest is its most prolific feature. You are a adventurer in a huge world, full of quests, mystery, murder, monsters and booze! The gameplay screen shows a Oblivion/Morrowind type camera, with nothing but your weapon sticking out in front of you. There is also a HP and SP bar. To move you press the arrow buttons, this sounds compromising but it is easy to use and fits the iPhone/iPod very well. On screen are also 4 icons essential to gameplay, Attack, Cast a spell, Use a potion and Rest. Playing the game is extremely fun, why you ask? well, think about everything you would want an iPhone RPG to have and this game has it. Great leveling up system, (Earn points when you level up to spend on your 4 main attributes and also many skills) a huge world, a large amount of different and diverse monsters, (Orcs/Goblins/Archers and even Dragons) and some amazing quests (Fight for evil or good or just get drunk and head to the brothel, its upto you!).

The only con of the gameplay is the difficulty when starting. You will have to be quite dedicated to get past the first few quests and kill your first few monsters as you may well end up dead quickly. I recommend you save a lot and keep a lot of potions with you. However, once you get past the shaky start of the game you will find yourself losing hours to it. I found the higher level I become, the more I enjoyed the game as more and more of it opens upto you.

The gameplay of this game is just superb, if you want to know more about the camera/game screen, check out videos of the game on youtube.

GRAPHICS - 4/5

The graphics is where, according to some reviewers, the game falls short. This however is completely based on the opinion of the player. The Quest is an old school RPG, in my opinion, the graphics suit perfectly, nothing looks ugly and it is all hand-drawn by the developers. Criticism is based on the fact that the game looks old compared to modern, full 3D games. However if The Quest had tried to for example use 3D models for the monsters and NPC's instead of sprite based animation it would have looked completely out of place.

The best way to decide on the graphics of this game is to look at the screenshots below and decide for yourself. But if your a retro gamer, i'm sure you will love this games graphics.

SOUND - 4/5

The sound in The Quest suits perfectly. There is BGM for day/night and depending on what kind of building you are in. There is also ambient and rain sounds. This really helps to immerse you into the game. At points I have found myself just sitting back and listening to the ambient sounds of the Inn or admiring the rain as it falls around me in a forest.

The only con of the sound in the game is that a seasoned player may start to find the BGM repetitive. This problem is not fixed by expansions as the music in the Quest cannot be easily replaced or added too. But with the addition of a couple of new tracks, I would be happy to give the sound in the game a rating of 5/5.

CONCLUSION - 4.5/5

The Quest is a superb game. I know of no other game that offers such huge possibilities and adventure on the iPhone. This is one of the must have games and I recommend you at least check this game out on the Appstore!. If your looking for adventure, this is what you want.

Portrait - A town at night

Portrait - A fight with a mistress

Landscape - Taking down an orc

Landscape - One second later and she was dust

Score: 4.5/5.0
Pretty good review, but why do you consider the expansions as a con? The OC is really huge, and there's lots to gain by playing a different race/build. And the expansion packs add even more content, so they're deffinitely pros, imo. Also, I'd give the sound a firm 3/5. It's rather bad.
Great review Joe! :)

You really manage to point out the good features of TQ :)
