- Tons of features including equipment upgrades, purchasable guns, variety of guns, stats, leveling system, etc.
- 4 characters with different strengths to choose from
- 4 player multiplayer over Bluetooth
- Lots of levels and additional challenges
- CHEAP
- Graphics and production value are slightly less quality than Minigore
- No survivor mode yet
- Some guns are a ton easier to use than others, that and equipement aren't very balanced
Alive 4-ever is one of those ever increasing amount of twin stick shooters that keep coming out on the iPhone. Due to the simplistic controls, these type of games tend to be much more fun than others because you can be much more percise vs. virtual "buttons" and tilt mechanics. If you've ever played Isotope, Minigore, or Meteor Blitz, the gameplay/controls are quite similar. Basically an ever increasing amount of enemies come at you and it's your job to kill them.
So what makes Alive 4-ever different from the rest? It actually feels like a full-blown well thought out game. There are levels with objectives, there are additional challenges for each level, upgradable guns that behave differently (sniper is more powerful but shoots much slower than an assault rifle), a leveling/stat system and much much more. There's even giant bosses!
One key feature is the multiplayer bluetooth play - you can team up with 3 others to blast zombies much more efficiently. It is highly recommended as well, as completing some of the challenges are very tough by yourself. In particular, in some challenges, you must rescue survivors that require you to carry them on your back. This of course prevents you from using your gun so you have to put him down every time a zombie gets close, which unfortunately is all the time.
So while it's a really fun and well made game, I do have some minor gripes that would prevent me from giving it a perfect score:
First, the graphics can be considered as "OK". I found myself bumping into trees that look like the terrain and having to squint really hard to take a good look at what kind of zombies are rushing towards me.
Second, there's plenty of levels and challenges there for you to take awhile to complete the game. However, once you do complete it, there's nothing much to do except to grind for weapons you don't need. A surivor mode with highscores at this point might be extremely useful.
Finally, I noticed myself always using the same gun/equipment and building the same stats on every character because without them, the game becomes much much harder. I was hoping with those alternative builds I could find a fun way to play, but unfortunately, I'd find myself just struggling to stay alive. Some people might like the additional challenge, but since there's really no reward, I didn't see the point.
Multiplayer zombie killing!
Buy new weapons, upgrade your stats, etc.
If you do buy the game, be sure to check out my guide on this site!
At $0.99, Alive 4-ever is definitely one of the better games on the app store for its price, with tons of features packed in it - even more than games priced 3x that on the AppStore. Go buy it now!
Score: 4.5/5.0
